Health & Safety

Health & Safety is fundamental to the success of a business; in 2017, new sentencing guidelines were brought in by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), consisting of unlimited fines and the prospect of imprisonment for Duty Holders who are found to have breached their duty of care in maintaining safe working environments. Duty holders include construction Companies, property Owners and even Employees.

Between 2014 and 2015 the average HSE fine equated to £29,000; however, recent statistics show, between 2016 and 2017 penalties rose significantly to an average of £126,000, totalling £69.9 million and overall, 593 prosecutions were  brought by the HSE, with a successful conviction rate of 93%.

The rise in prosecution statistics has resulted in many companies when inviting tenders, excluding those that cannot meet minimum standards, such as being able to produce risk assessments and method statements. As a result, Contractors are increasingly evaluating their policies and procedures, as well as implementing safe systems of work throughout a projects lifecycle, from conception to completion to ensure successful bidding for contracts and moral, legal and financial consequences are averted.
